Avidius

From Graal Military Wiki

The Avidius family is a house of members of the Graal Military Community, primarily those who are or were members of the Aurean Empire, especially under the reign of Nylius Avidius. It boasts a diverse and highly-respected roster of family members, including Aurean emperors, senior community figures, and well-connected individuals. It has been a long-standing tradition for the family to have a proper family tree, stemming back to the original Mevarus Avidius.

Membership is severely limited. There are three primary ways of getting into the family: marriage, adoption, and offspring. For marriages, they are required to marry into the family or they will not be considered its members. For adoptions and offspring, they automatically qualify, provided that a fully-recognized member of the family is the one making the adoption or having the offspring.

It has been customary for members of the family to stay in the same guilds and groups or normally work for the benefit of the family even if they are in different ones, but this norm has been challenged recently with the fallouts between two rival factions of the community whose members were either directly part of or strongly affiliated with the family.

Overview

The name Avidius was meant to be a second name for Nylius' previous name, Mevarus—Mevarus Avidius. This was when the Roman-themed guilds started to show up, and he was looking to change his name to something else from the one before that. It took several months before he finally decided to use it as a family name.

The name was first given to Paw Vivre and Arno Kaage for a project known as "PAM", and they exchanged family names to bind themselves together. The partnership proved to be futile, and they later dropped the names and moved on from the endeavor.

The name was later given to several people, but Nylius simply revoked the name after he realized how "careless" he was with the name. He then decided to give it to people who have "responsibly and outstandingly" served him or the guilds he helped lead. This has been the practice since 2016 but has since expanded to include the offspring of some senior family members, including some other Aurean emperors.

Nyl: "As much as possible, I do refrain from directly making family members and let it be determined through marriage or adoption. There are cases, such as that of Laken, Perseus, and Basel (Ajax), that I personally ask people to join because of their merits and service."

2020

Avidius was kept as a behind-the-scenes family as certain families (such as Vaughn) dominated my publicity. Sometime after summer, Ajax Kaage, one of Nyl's closest and most loyal lords, approached him and asked for permission to join House Wexler under the banner of the Avidius family, which later became known as House Avidius. As this was the set up, Ajax was implicitly acting lord of the house as Nylius had other responsibilities then, being the patriarch of the Vaughn dynasty. House Avidius was later absorbed into Auro Roma.

After Auro Roma, Ajax again took up the banner of House Avidius and led a small group of Aurean loyalists to continue its civil society through Montecon. Several individuals (most of whom were loyal Aureans) were adopted into the family and made up a bulk of Montecon's officer corps then.

Merovech

Merovech is a cadet branch of Gens Avidia for Ol' West and served in Marseille as its ruling family. As a family solely for the Nyl's Ol' West endeavors, it is an entirely different tree from its Classic counterpart. There was also a period when Merovech was renamed to Rothstein for a company project but it was reverted back to Merovech later on. Those granted the Merovech name kept both Merovech and Rothstein while those granted the name Rothstein were not given permission to use Merovech, except for Jiub/Abram.
